On the most holy days of the year, we traditionally read stories about three women in crisis. Each is profoundly in touch with her own grief, longing and uncertainty. In this mini-session, we'll spend time with Hannah, Hagar and Sarah (all featured in Rosh Hashanah’s Torah or Haftarah portions) exploring their stories through lenses of myth, literature, and meaning-making -- and asking how their complicated lives can help us understand our own. Creative midrash-making and re-interpretation in any form will be strongly encouraged!

Alicia Jo Rabins (she/her) is a writer, musician, performer, and feminist Torah teacher. The New York Times calls her voice “gorgeous”; BookPage calls her writing “a balm against all the hurt places of humanity.” Her spiritual memoir, When We're Born We Forget Everything (Schocken Books) was published in March 2026. Rabins is the author of four additional books, including two poetry collections, a children's book about Leonard Cohen, and a collection of essays about Jewish spirituality and early parenthood, Even God Had Bad Parenting Days. A performer and composer who also works in theater and film, Rabins tours internationally with Girls in Trouble, her indie-folk song cycle about women in Torah, and has released four episodes of Girls in Trouble: The Series, an indie web series about Biblical women. She holds a BA in creative writing from Barnard College, a MFA in poetry from Warren Wilson, and a MA in Jewish Women’s Studies from JTS, and was independently ordained as a rabbi in June 2026.
