Genesis includes many of the Torah’s most famous stories, but in many ways, it remains a strange book. The people Israel arrive late to their own story and then emerge very gradually while the book lingers on the in-between—the space where old identities are shed and new identities emerge. The divine call to Avra(ha)m can be considered the founding of the people Israel, but there are eleven chapters before we get to that moment. Once it happens, its significance only begins to take shape. Whatever Avra(ha)m was he will be no longer, but what he is becoming is not immediately clear to himself or to the other people with whom he interacts.
This course will explore the book of Genesis, its approach to storytelling, and its potential to transform the way we think about identity, difference, and peoplehood. In contrast to the tendency to wall off different parts of the text from one another, we'll examine the ways that genealogies interact with surrounding narratives to produce meaning.

This class will be recorded and available to enrolled students to watch later.
