You've heard about how the Talmud says that Plague of Frogs was #OneGiantFrog, and you were there when Moses time-traveled to Rabbi Akiva's Classroom -- but what ELSE does the Talmud say? Pop in Olivia Devorah's Talmud Mix Tape and hit play on eight weeks of obscurely delightful Talmud Deep Cuts that'll get you laughing, sighing, squirming, and asking all the right questions! What is THIS doing in the Talmud? What insight does it offer us to the living, tangible, and relatably bizarre world of our ancestors, 1500-200 years ago? How do they make us rethink our own lives and what we'll leave behind?
Because, once we encounter these texts, we get to decide what we want do with them! Inspired by the Sugya Show-and-Tell of my teacher, Julie Batz, I would like to invite us into a practice of creatively processing our weekly learning. During each of our Zoom meets, and then on the class Discord between sessions, we are all invited to share how our learning is working its way through us.
Whatever your medium/mediums they're welcome here - and don't doubt that you have a medium! Fan-fiction, sculpture, watercolous, poetry, meditation prompts, skits, sketches, songs, chants, collages, mocktail recipes, puppet shows, zines, zingers, interpretive dances, your thing you're pretty sure only you do - we want it all! Your art is the commentary that the Talmud has been waiting for 🌅
This Talmud MixTape TrackList includes: Dogs, Monkeys, Bloody Messes, Women Talking, Loopholes, Puns, The Number 24, and some absolute CLOWN TALMUD. Bring your chevruta(s), discover your drash, and make some art! ~mwah'~—
This class will be recorded and available to enrolled students to watch later.
