Have you heard talk of "the apocrypha?" Have you been curious about this mysterious realm of texts, once held as sacred by Jews but then relegated to the sidelines of our tradition? You're not the only one. In this course, you can dive into the book of Jubilees, as a springboard into the broader realm known as Jewish apocrypha!

So what is Jubilees? Well, Over 2100 years ago, somebody looked at the book of Genesis. Their main takeaway? “This is an okay book. Maybe a 7 out of 10. But it could really use some edits if I'm being honest.” So they channeled all their chutzpah, and made their own version. They rewrote the book of Genesis -- keeping much of it the same but shifting many details, adding new characters, and orienting the whole thing around cycles of 49 years (called “Jubilees”). Here are some questions they asked and answered:

"Why did Genesis leave out all the women between Eve and Sarah (20 generations after Eve), and how can we bring them back into the story?" "Would God really test Abraham by asking him to sacrifice his son Isaac -- what if a demon did it instead?" And most importantly..."What becomes possible when we permit ourselves to receive sacred texts from the past, as our full inheritance?" In this interactive class, we'll explore all the above and more. We'll journey our way through the book of Jubilees, and consider more broadly how books left out of our traditional canon can help us in re-envisioning our Jewish past, present, and future.

This class will be recorded and available to enrolled students to watch later.
