In these times of rising fascism, Jewish people and organizations are trying to find the moral compasses that will lead us through. The prophetic voices of Tanakh, the strength of committed Jews, the storytelling power of midrash are all currently being used to hold our hope. But what of blatant political statements traditional to Judaism?
The Mussar movement is a Jewish ethical and educational movement filled with a variety of practices meant to focus moral conduct within spiritual paths. Many of these early Mussar leaders living at the heights of the Industrial Revolution's dehumanizing power spoke about worker's rights, mutual aid, and community power in ways that still resonate today. Meet Reuven
Reuven (ze/hir) is a sleep medicine tech, a rabbinical student, an unexpected mystic, and a cat dad. Ze has a degree in Classical Studies with nearly two decades in sleep medicine and isn't afraid to use them. An experienced teacher, currently ze is creating a variety of interactive experiences for trans/queer Jewish folks to embrace their inherent sacredness. Reuven also publishes written reflections at the blog Eish Zarah (Strange Fire).
Ze left Mississippi and now resides in Seattle’s unceded Duwamish and Suquamish lands with zir two cats, three other queer Jews, and enough books for a decade of committed reading. Reuven’s vibes are deep-south sensibility, a belief that binaries are just human constructs, and continuous curiosity. Reuven uses ze/hir pronouns in honor of Leslie Feinberg ז״ל הי״ד.
